Backgammon is one of the oldest games (over 5,000 years old), originating in Mesopotamia (Persia). The oldest board was found in Iran; similar games existed in Egypt (Senet) and Rome (Tabula). In the Middle Ages, it was popular in Europe (Trick-Track). The modern rules of Backgammon were formulated by Edmond Hoyle in 1743.
